The Sumapaz National Natural Park is the largest and most beautiful moorland in the world, a characteristic that makes the department of Cundinamarca an ideal destination to visit due to everything that can be done in Bogotá and near Bogotá.

The Páramo de Sumpaz , hosts many stories, among which stands out that of the Muisca community, who considered this area as a supremely sacred area where the gods lived, and it may be a legend, but the truth is that this moorland is so beautiful that it seems that it had been made by the gods themselves.

Visiting the Sumapaz is an experience that you can not miss, and much more if you are a nature lover and enjoy being surrounded by it. Learn how to get to the Páramo de Sumapaz and some usefull tips to enjoy your visit to this place.

 

How to get to the Páramo de Sumapaz?

 

To get to the Páramo de Sumapaz , you just have to take a Transmilenio bus untilthe Usme Portal, then transfer and take the Usme Centro route, and get off at the city hall stop. When you arrive here you will find buses to the Páramo de Sumapaz , for a value of 10,000 COP approximately.

The other option is to go to Portal Norte Station. Here you can take the bus to Guatavita for 9,000 COP. The bus enters through Sesquilé and you have 2 options: One is to ask the driver to leave you at the detour to the Laguna and there wait for a bus that takes you there or to go to the main town and take the bus that is worth 7,000 COP .

When you are in the Sumpaz Park , you do not have to pay a entrance fee, it is completly free, you just have to provide some personal information for the registry of the people that enter the park and some recommendations you need to have in mind during your stay in Sumapaz.

 

What to do in the Páramo de Sumapaz?

 

In the Páramo de Sumapaz , basically what there is to do is hiking through nature and contemplate the wonderful landscapes that are found throughout the park, as well as observation of endemic fauna and flora.

However, within this vast expanse of life, there are some places that can be visited and that hide interesting facts and stories. The first is the lagoon  Alar Pasquilla , which according to the Tourism District Institute and the Chlorophyll Urban Corporation is one of the seven wonders of the capital. This lagoon is full of the famous frailejones; species of plant that transforms the mist into water and feeds the rivers and streams of the country.

In the Páramo de Sumapaz , you will also have the opportunity to see the ruins of the prison that the dictator Gustavo Rojas Pinilla ordered to build to keep his prisioners here. Also worthy of special mention is the viewpoint Buenos Aires or Loma Chata , from which you can get a great view of a good part of the páramo and of four lagoons that are part of a single ecosystem complex.

In the Sumapaz , there are also diverse and fantastic lagoons among which are La Negra, Los Colorados, Los Tunjos, Larga and Cajiitas . Another attraction is the Sanctuary of Bocagrande , a complex of ten bodies of water where the colors seem to have life and finally, the Bat Cave of Verjón , a place where speleology can be done .

The Sumapaz Park , has several trails that are already demarcated so that people can enjoy the experience of walking this sanctuary and see some of the previous places. Some of the routes are Andabobos, Chisacá and La Media Naranja.

 

Recommendations for the Sumapaz Park

 

If you are going to visit the Páramo de Sumapaz , the most important recommendation that you can not forget is that this is a very fragile system and therefore you should be careful with your actions inside the park, so we recommend you not to throw garbage and bring it all with you when you return. Important to be vaccinated against yellow fever, with a minimum of 10 days. The vaccination card might be requested at the entrance, although it is not often, it is best if you get you vaccine to avoid catching diseases.

You should also keep in mind that you should wear warm and waterproof clothing (jacket, hat, boots, gloves and glasses) because the weather is very cold and unpredictable, so at any time a sudden rain may fall. Finally, bring water,  sweets, a sandwich, or any other thing to eat and a lots of liquid,

Now if you want to camp, you should know that the Sumapaz does not have an infrastructure for this purpose, but it does offer a space where it is possible to put you tent.
