Basic Information:
The Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta is the largest lagoon complex in Colombia. It is home to the mingling of the Magdalena River, other tributaries descending from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, and the Caribbean Sea.
For many years, residents of nearby villages came to fish here, and the long fishing trips drove them to venture further afield and spend more time there. Over time, they began to settle within the swamp, building what are known as palafitos, houses on stilts in shallow water. These villages were caught in the middle of the armed conflict in the region and today are a testament to the resilience and regeneration of the social fabric.

Day 1
Our trip begins in Santa Marta and heads to the Pueblo Viejo tourist stop, where we'll board a motorboat to Buena Vista, one of the three stilt villages in the area. During this approximately one-hour tour of the swamp, we'll be able to spot birds and locals fishing.
Upon arrival, we'll explore the area and enjoy a cultural showcase from the community that welcomes us. At the end, we'll head to Nueva Venecia, where we'll settle in and enjoy a delicious typical lunch from the region. We'll have the opportunity to appreciate a beautiful sunset, which blends with the waters of the swamp and the locals' handcrafted homes.
Day 2
For our second day, we'll set out very early in the morning to tour the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, where we'll engage in various activities, including birdwatching and a day of artisanal fishing. This tour will be carried out in canoes with paddles and oars.
Note: From December to March, we can take a tour on handmade sailboats.
