How to get to the Nemocón Salt Mine in Cundinamarca

The municipality of Nemocón is one of the places that you should not miss to visit on your trip to the department of Cundinamarca . Located very close to Bogotá , the town is known for its salt minal which is an amazing place.

Originally, Nemocón is one of the salt towns of Colombia , and for a long time, its minal of salt was one of the most important of the country, so after it was closed, it was recovered by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism and It became what it is today: one of the main tourist attractions of Cundinamarca.

On the way to the Nemocón Salt Mine

 

Given its proximity to Bogotá and its tourist importance for the department, getting to Nemocón is not very difficult, you should go to the Terminal Salitre or Terminal del Norte in Bogotá, and take a direct bus to Nemocón . The price of the ticket to Nemocón costs approximately COP 8,000 and the trip lasts about an hour and a half. The buses leave every hour from the terminal.

Another option is to go first to Zipaquirá , where you can visit the Cathedral of Sal , one of the wonders of Colombia , and then take a bus to Nemocón for a value of 3,000 COP.

And a much more fun option is to get to Nemocón on the Tourist Train of La Sabana or Turistren , which can be taken at the Sabana Station or Usaquén Station. This train usually goes to Zipaquira making a beautiful tour of the Bogotá savannah and visiting some of the most beautiful villages that are in its way, however, you can travel to Nemocón in Turistren paying an additional value that includes the entrance to the Mine of Salt of Nemocón.

 

Information about the Nemocón Salt Mine

 

The route through the Nemocón Salt Mine is done 80 meters underground by 1,600 tunnels through which eight million tons of salt were extracted approximately. The visit lasts an hour, more or less and during it you will be able to appreciate fantastic places that are scattered throughout the mine and in which unique things have been created out of salt.

As soon as you enter you will come across a room with a ceiling that exceeds 30 meters in height and where the first stalagmite and stalactite formations are found, these are spectacular formations that where created on the roof by the action of minerals and have taken the curious shape of roots. They are more than a meter long and have been forming over millions of years.

One of the main attractions of the Nemocón Salt Mine is what has been called as El Corazón de Nemocón , a crystal of more than 1,600 kilos;  the largest in South America. This crystal was found there and later it was carved into the shape of a heart, that's where its name come from.

Throughout the tour you will appreciate amazing salt formations and water mirrors that have been created naturally through time. Among other wonders you will find the well of desires , the Chapel of the Virgen del Carmen, which has a sculpture of the virgin with a  large circular rock at its feet which represents the world, and a monument to the indigenous communities who lived in the area.

Among other things you will find the Museum of Natural History of La Sabana, where you can see fossils and learn more about the history of the department from an archeology and geology point of view. You can also find a replica of the capsule in which  the 33 miners were rescued in Chile and the place where the film was filmed, as well as other monuments and replicas that honor the miners that worked in this salt mine.

The cost of entry to the Nemocón Salt Mine is 29,000 COP for adults and 20,000 COP for children aged 4 to 12, disabled and adults over 60 years old. The Nemocón Salt Mine is open every day from 9 am to 5 pm.
